When we opened Farm’r there was no quinoa on our menu. We loved the stuff, but quinoa was being grow mostly in Peru and the distance didn’t fit with our beliefs.
A few months later we stumbled upon Jamie and the story behind Quinta Quinoa and fell in love. After a severe health scare, Jamie dedicated his life to developing a local quinoa product.
Today, that’s the quinoa we use in store for our Kale and Quinoa Salad.
We did a small interview with Jamie from Quinta to give some more details on the Quinta story.
You can also buy packages of Quinoa on the retail shelf at Farm’r.
1.. Can you tell us about Quinta’s history?
Jamie Draves formed Quinta Quinoa after a health crisis in 2007 that resulted in the loss of a third of his pancreas. From this, Jamie was forced to follow a very limited diet consisting of high-quality, nutritious foods.
Many superfoods, in particular, quinoa, were a critical factor in regaining his health. Realizing the use of high-quality foods for improved health drove Jamie’s passion and pursuit to form Quinta Quinoa, and its sister research company, Katan Kitchens, and demonstrate the value of superfoods for a healthy diet.
After eight years of working closely with University of Guelph, Jamie was able to create a complete value chain for quinoa, from natural breeding to production, to processing, to sales and marketing.
Quinta is now grown by Canadian farmers from Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Quebec; and it has higher nutrient count than any other quinoa (10g of protein).
2. What is so wonderful about quinoa?
As the recently released, Canada’s Food Guide mention, we should incorporate more whole grain foods to our diets, and more importantly, those that have higher nutrient counts. Canada’s Food Guide talks about quinoa as a seed that has an excellent source of plant protein, nutrients, and fibre all concentrated in a small serving size.
This is one part of why quinoa it is so wonderful! A small serving can give you a lot of the key nutrients you need daily. Also, quinoa is so versatile that it can be incorporated in many dishes, from salads to porridge, granola bars to chili, and many more delicious masterpieces
3. What’s new in the world of Quinta?
There is always something new happening at Quinta; we encourage everyone to follow our journey and share theirs on social media (@QuintaQuinoa).
On March 20-21 Quinta will be the only Canadian Start-up to compete for an award at the Global Food Summit in Munich, Germany and right after (March 22-14) the competition, Quinta will have a booth (#333) at the Green Living Show in Toronto.
